Polychromatic goth?

I was just thinking about how I consider myself a mere fledgling goth even though I'm now in my mid-twenties and have been fascinated with the goth subculture since I was about eleven years old (thank you, Seattle Weekly, for doing an article on the goth scene!). This is because I have been in the closet, as it were, when it comes to wearing the obvious: black lace, corsets, boots that make my ears pop from elevation change when I climb into them, etc.

But I think that meanwhile I have been playing with other aspects of 'The Goth Aesthetic', like jewel tones, silky materials, flowing, romantic lines, eccentric pairings, things like that. It made me think that many of us fall victim to the stereotypes of the non-goth community (i.e. it's all about wearing black as opposed to something deeper) in order to recognize one another on the street. Not to mention that it is 90% attitude, and as Sarah Vowell expressed, you can wear pink and still exude doom and gloom.

So what are your less obvious choices/articles of clothing? Do you have a favourite colour to wear other than black? Have you successfully paired a fuzzy yellow duck purse with a spiked collar? How do you break the stereotype while still keeping the goth aesthetic?

    "doom and gloom" of goth

I actually fall into a different aspect of "goth". I fell in love with "goth" because of the gothic architecture, period clothing, writings, etc. There is a different view as to what is "beautiful".

There is beauty in ugly, there is beauty in pain, etc.

I see goth as being able to see beauty in things that might not be "pretty"....seeing beauty in a lush, sad, song that makes you cry.... the intricacy of a spider web... the decay of a tree... etc.

As for the clothing, yes, I wear black but so do many nowadays. I have died my hair black but so do many. I love corsets and boots but so do many.

I enjoy deep, rich, color in my clothing now.... but I will always hold a special place in my heart for those things that might be missunderstood.

Very well put. This is how I feel. It's not about what you wear or don't wear. It's about beauty. If you find corsets and dread falls beautiful, that's wonderful (I know I do!), and it is all about a personal sense of what is beautiful or emotionally touching, like a broken window or an animal's skeleton.

As a teenager when my mom would obviously not go to "strange" stores, I would dig through sales racks of trendy stores for clothes that no Los Angeles teenager in her right mind would buy. And very happily (for my mom too) they would be cheap as hell. So stores like Wet Seal, Rampage, hell I scored a $12 dress at Guess, etc etc. I sorta do it now today. For daily clothes I like simple things, closer to gothabilly style with just a t-shirt and loose pants (but never without knee high boots), and for those I cheat and go to Gap. Oh the horror, the horror, I know. I hate actually going there because of the people that tend to be there, but they really are the only places that have plain black things. Once maybe every three years I'll go there to get a couple of shirts and pants. Guaranteed they'll have something truly plain black. And they'll be cheaper than other places.

Maybe not quite the type of answer you were looking for, but there it is.

I also think with the developments of cybergoths there really is no color significance.

I love color... black gets really boring if that's all I wear. BUT, all of my colors are jewel tones and they always have something black to work off of (burgundy shirt with black skirt, multicolored dreads tied into black hair, pink and gold eyeshadow, or maybe green, if I'm wearing all black clothing).

A lot of it has to do with the style of clothing, too. My clothing usually has a romantic or Victorian quality to it.

I tend to do the same. If I could afford it, I would have a full on Victorian ensemble, but for the time being I just make do with lots of lace and tailored-looking things. I loved how about a year ago "Victoriana" and piratey clothes were trendy so I could stock up on cheap lacy shirts. It was great! I hope it happens again soon.

I LOVE black clothes. I am, as a rule, in head to toe black but for work my black clothes are "normal." Or at least "normal-ish!" LOL But I do have a sick passion for richly colored skirts. Emerald greens, blood reds, deep purples, midnight blues... and even some more peacock hues. So I pair those up with black tops and black boots or sandals and at work everyone goes, "Oh Alex is being COLORFUL today!" LOL I also have some red and some purple shirts that I wear with, of course, black pants. Color is not forbidden and can certainly be used in a very "gothy" way. But I will take up ice skating on the river Styx before you catch me adding a fluffy duckie purse to my ensemble. I do have a Maleficent one tho! heh heh...secretly a big Disney dork... ;)
    Regards,
    Alex

I have a passion for all shades of blue....royal being favorite. I have to do the office clerk thingie so I opt for black trousers or to spice things up, really rich, oriental blue sarong , tunic suit. It took me a moment to think how to describe it, (had to ask Hubby). Its very girly but unsual, not something the advarage joette has packed in her closet. It still sings to me of Gothyness simply because of its mythic feel.

Yeah, I'm a sucker for anything wafty, as long as it steers well clear of pastels. I think I need my own personal wind machine for full effect though. Mythic is a great way of describing it.

I recall an "african-american" (PC?) girl in a class of mine in elementary school who said "she's jealous that she's not black, because black goes with everything"... in passing. I realized later, that I could apply this to my fashion theory. Of course there are many colors that I would never wear, for example... burnt orange, yellow, brown.... Black is an amazingly versatile color. Admittedly, I use it as an excuse to be lazy. I can take any item from my wardrobe and pair it with any other because everything is black, then I accessorize with some vampy red thing or silver jewelry. I love black! The funny thing about it, is that I could be wearing a pair of cargo pants and a tank top, and people still comment on how I am always dressed up. Some goths can really pull off color... in gothy pin up styles and such. I love it all when it seems to fit into any sort of sub genre of goth fashion! This is turning into a rant ; ) I just absolutely love goth, it's got to be in my genes!

She was "african american" but she wasn't black?

I think Goth is a feel or state of mind. Any color goes with a sharp and intellgent mind. Mythic is how I like to try to live my life. I love the story that I share with everyone by how I carry or live my life. That is mythic.
