i have naturally strawberry blonde hair, which i normally dye to a darker red. however, in december i decided to go black. and i LOVE it.
however, i seem to be the only person on the planet (or internet) whose black hair is fading. i keep seeing all these posts all over the place saying "i hate my black hair and i want it to fade!"
originally i used garnier 100% blue black because it's my favorite brand for reds. it truly made my hair blue (trust me it was pretty yucky), then faded to black. it was normal for a couple weeks. then i started noticing BIG chunks of hair that were blonde peeking through. then i realized that my roots on top of that were making a big appearance. so in late january i decided to dye it again. i used loreal feria..and to be honest, it was SO much easier to use. the color developed quickly so my friend could see what he was dyeing, and most of all the color was easy to spread and didn't stink. usually garnier 100% has an almost..gluey consistency and it's really difficult to spread around onto hair. so anyway, although i loved using the feria dye, it faded even quicker than the first time i had dyed it. right after i dyed it with the feria i was really happy because i thought the color was much better.
but now i'm sitting here with very black ends, big strawberry roots, random chunks of strawberry blonde all around my face, and a general ashy color on the top of my head. so here is my dilemma i guess: although i absolutely love the way i look with black hair, apparently the maintenence is too much for me. i'm considering buying a bottle and doing my roots, and just trying to maintain it. but on the other hand, who knows how quickly i will have to do that again. even dyeing my hair twice in two months was a little much for me..i really don't want to have to do it every month. i'm scared to go to the salon and get it stripped. i know it's expensive. and trust me..i CANNOT pull off that orangey bleached hue. so i'm concerned that stripping it will also be a waste..i would never bleach my hair.
i'm considering maybe letting the color fade further (and wear a headband constantly..haha), and then dyeing it the dark red that i normally use. so does anyone have any thoughts on this? will it accept the dye? i apologize if all of this sounds elementary, but i never dreamed that i'd have so much trouble with fading, as that seems to be the opposite for most people.
thanks in advance!

Re: black hair advice needed (long)
Tue, March 6, 2007 - 2:05 PMI've used Clairol black blue (#52 I believe) quite a few times and have had no problems with it. I used it to cover previously bleached parts, which was about the shade of strawberry blonde. That has more of a watery texture and was pretty easy to spread evenly, which may be the problem that you had.
The other thing I can think of is maybe you use a particular kind of shampoo that washes away these colors, and because red is closer to your natural hair color you didn't notice it so much or it didn't show. I haven't heard of a case where hair rejects a certain color, so that's probably not it.
Perhaps using stronger developer will help make it stay longer? -

Re: black hair advice needed (long)
Tue, March 6, 2007 - 5:33 PMhmm okay, clairol..i will keep that brand in mind. the shampoo that i use currently is the dove shampoo and conditioner made for hair colored darker than its natural shade. also, any suggestions for different shampoo would be welcome..i also try not to wash it too often.
it's true that the red dye was much more natural looking on me..but the areas that are peeping through are my roots where there is no red dye.
it might be a myth, but i've definitely heard that reddish hair doesn't accept dyes very well..so i'm starting to believe it!
i'm a little bit ignorant on some of these terms, can you buy developer on its own? how does this work? anyway thanks for your response! -

Re: black hair advice needed (long)
Thu, March 8, 2007 - 2:57 PMBasically go to a beauty supply store (Sally's is the major chain and pretty easy to find), and you'll find good sized plastic bottles with white goop in them. They're developers, and you use them with dyes that aren't pre-mixed, such as Clairol. With the developers, you control the intensity of the dyes, and they go in strengths of 10, 20, 40... and most beauty supply stores don't sell above 40, though professional salons have access to 80, which is nuts. These strengths depend on hair thickness, original color, etc etc. So with my black hair, I use 40 to bleach it down, whereas I only need 20 to bring it back to black.
Stronger developers are harsher in chemicals, so keep it in mind when using them. Your hair WILL melt off if you let it sit for too long, and be sure to not leave it in piles on top of your hair. I would suggest you try 20 and see how it goes.

Re: black hair advice needed (long)
Mon, May 14, 2007 - 5:58 PMOkay! I have blonde almost white hair and dying it black always seemed fruitless. Red always stays and i unfortunatley have yet to dye it black over my natural color, instead i always do it after red because im impatient. Well its red and i want it black agian! But this time i have the best advice i have yet to try and a dye i feel very good about.
first off try to let you hair fade of its old color as much as possible "until you get tired of waiting" ,
The get a shampoo that lowers the PH values in your hair, this allows less damage and makes the hair except the dye more evenly.
I also just found a dye "loreil preference cream". It came with a ph leveling serum you put in your hair before dying.
If fades, do the touch up instructions and always use ph balancer, even for touch ups!
I believe doing all that, will ensure longer lasting color
I have heard people buying manic panic or those temperary colors and putting them in there color safe shampoos to give hair some color with each wash. It sounds like a good idea since its veggie oil based.
i read something about never dying permenant over progressive or compound dye, but i dont really know why your not supposed to do that.
Im still waiting for this red to fade then i will dye mine black agian and hopefully not go through such torture agian!

Re: black hair advice needed (long)
Tue, March 6, 2007 - 3:38 PMHey Anya, I have the same problem... Although my hair is naturally very dark (almost black).
I had it coloured in a beautiful magenta red several times, and it always faded. Then I decided to turn back to my natural color. No matter how dark is the color that I get, red always appears. So maybe the guilty is the red dye you used before.
If you don't want to bleach your hair, I know there's a product that only removes the old dye and doesn't damage the hair, but, my goodness, it smells like Hell... Sorry, I can't remember the name. -

Re: black hair advice needed (long)
Tue, March 6, 2007 - 5:37 PMhaha! maybe it really is the red dye...which is another funny thing. i've always heard that red hair dye is the hardest to keep from fading! mine certainly faded every time i went to the salon and got it done. believe it or not the color always lasted longer when i did it myself.
i've heard about some loreal thing..color zap? does it get your hair back to its natural shade? or is it stripped to blonde? thanks!! -

Re: black hair advice needed (long)
Thu, March 8, 2007 - 10:34 AMFeria blows. I've been using it for ages, and the black feria colors never stay in my hair as long as other brands. I love 'using' the product, but hate the result. I didn't have any problem with the reds from feria, however. Someone in their R&D department needs to tweak the black, IMHO.
I've used Clairol recently as well, and not only has my black not faded, it is the most "natural' looking black I've ever used. You may also want to shy away from the blue blacks, as someone with a fair complexion that looks good with red hair. I'm the same way naturally, and a pinky complexion with blue/black hair leaves something to be desired, whereas a matte black (sort of a black leather color) allows your complexion to look more balanced and natural, and you don't have the added disadvantage of Comic book blue hair for the first week or so, unless that's what you're going for, in which case, rock on.

Re: black hair advice needed (long)
Tue, March 6, 2007 - 7:35 PMstick with clairol IMO, it works better than loreal or garnier, i used garnier blue black and it faded out in a couple of washes. anyway u go about it your going to have to touch up your roots when your going from such a light to dark color, but calirol makes this neat thing call clairol root touchup, basically it's a lot like dyeing but a little less evasive, u apply the color to your roots let it sit for like 20 min. then apply to the rest of your hair for an allover touchup and let it sit for 5 min.
i think the red may be your problem, i would suggest useing a toner on your hair to get rid of any brassiness, and then trying a kinda flat black, blue black will not stick well to red hair because red cancels out blue in the whole color chart scheme, i know this from a hairdying accident, with some perm. navy blue stuff ( yes it exsists no it's not a good idea, doesn't spread evenly and ends up a gross color ), i went to a salon and she explained that dying my hair red would cancel the blue out, and it did .
good luck

Re: black hair advice needed (long)
Tue, March 20, 2007 - 8:47 PMI am naturally blonde and had been dying my hair dark brown and then wanted to add some blond underneath. I used that Color Zap stuff that someone mentioned and it turned my hair a bright yellow. From that point I was able to dye it a softer blonde and it worked great! Then I started dying the rest of my hair black and when trying to use the color zap to get rip of the black.. DISASTER! First time I used it, it turned my hair bright orange and when I tryed to put a color on top of it nothing happened. So I tryed to apply the color zap again and it just made it a light orange. The color zap doesn't exactly take out the color that you have put in your hair but it takes out the dark pigments that you have put in leaving it a red-orange-yellow color. You will want to dye another color on top of it. Also, you will want to look at the dyes that you have previously used. They may contain some salt (I forget what exatly it is called) but this with the strip/bleach on top will turn your hair kinda mushy. You will notice this when washing your hair. You might want to talk to a hair consultant. I wish I would have.

Re: black hair advice needed (long)
Wed, March 28, 2007 - 3:06 PMno one can pull off the stripped hue.
I had blood red hair for 10 years and went black. Yes its hard to cover the red, for some reason...mine would either fade or turn green when I use over the counter colors. I used a semi permanent black from off the shelf to get it started into the black and then 3 weeks later I used Clarol Color Expressions blck (from Sally's) mixed with 1/4 a tube of color expressions color additive (using the red) and 30 level pure white. for long hair you need 2 applications worth, in one application. That could be part of the problem too. If you have thick or long hair you may not be saturating all of your hair. One bottle of over the counter is not usually enough to cover very thick hair, or very long hair.
You'll still have roots, this happens with black dyed hair, but the fading should be much less of a problem if you use good products and enough of them. You can apply the color in another month or two, to the roots alone using a brush and patience. apply to the whole head at the final 10 minutes of processing and it should be pretty seemless.
blah blah blah
that was a long response.

Wed, March 28, 2007 - 4:13 PMI use Clairol blue black.I usually dye my hair about twice a year.Maybe you should try henna dye. It's the dry type.I know in the salon where I get my color alot of ladies use it because it's less damaging, but I don't have time to let them mix and wait to dry.I need something quick.Maybe you should try looking into Henna Dye. Good luck!

Re: black hair advice needed (long)
Thu, April 5, 2007 - 12:52 PMOk... my turn....
I had black hair for years, and it was a total pain in the ass!
I had to dye my roots once a month, and always missed spots.
When I tried having it done in a salon, I'd walk out with black splotches around my neck and forhead... that lasted for a few days. It faded and would look stringy... ugh.
So, last year I had my hair stripped and dyed red.
I found that the red was better for me because it blended better with my natural hair when growing out... and I don't look all washed out without make-up on : )
Even better. I found a really dark blackish red....
On the down side, the company stopped making it (which seems to happen every time I find a product or clothing style I like ).
So, I am again on the hunt.
My recommendation for your situation, uber dark blackish red!

I found that doing a zig-zag part in my hair (before I got bangs),
really helped to make the new growth less obvious.

Re: black hair advice needed (long)
Tue, April 10, 2007 - 11:52 PMTo tell the truth, I'm not entirely sure what brand of hairdye I use, but it is generally the cheapest kind at the drugstore (around $4 instead of around $10), and the effects that I've gotten with it are lovely -- it fades out very, very little (and that's with my hair, which does not easily accept dye), and in what few spots it does, it leaves a gorgeous deep red-brown color that is barely distinguishable from the black.

Re: black hair advice needed (long)
Mon, May 21, 2007 - 7:42 PMJudging from your description it sounds like the problem lies in the fact that your natural hair color is light. I am also a natural red head, though my shade is more of a dark auburn and I find it difficult to maintain all my roots without the black fading. I end up touching it up every two months or so and it looks fine but it is more of a pain when your hair is naturally red or blonde than say dark brown. I always want it to be more blue-black that it turns out and it certainly does fade.
Maybe next time I touch it up I will try clairol instead of Feria.
