Hi everyone,
I would like to make a tea hat for a ball coming up on the 2nd of February but I have no idea how to let alone what supplies would be needed. Would I need any sewing experience? Would it be expensive?
Thanks :)

Re: Tea hats
Mon, January 21, 2008 - 7:53 AMHi there!
Decorating a hat is easy! You don't need sewing experience, you can manage with a glue gun. They can glue almost anything to any surface. They are not expensive and you can find them at Michaels, along with appropriate glue.
For the hat, I would use feathers, ribbons, cameos... Check your local craft stores for ideas, but I think you could make the hat for no more than $20-30 (not including the prize of the hat).
Or, if you want, I can make it for you :) I specialize in mini top hats. Check my store to see if there's something you like, or PM me:

Mon, January 21, 2008 - 4:40 PMWowie, you win at life..
Thanks for not making your hats ridiculously expensive :)
The thing is, I was expecting to get a certain dress but they don't have it in my size...so I really won't be needing a tea hat anymore...unless of course they get the dress in my size again.
Thanks for the offer though :)

Re: Tea hats
Tue, January 22, 2008 - 5:38 AMI was going to suggest that she buy a mini top hat from a craft store and decorate it herself w/a trusty glue gun but you beat me to it!
I've been pondering doing this for myself but the thing I keep running over in my mind is, how will I affix it to my hair? I've thought about putting small holes in the brim (close to the body of the hat) and then place bobby pins there. I've also thought about gluing barrettes to the underside of the brim. Which would you suggest? Or, even better, do you have any suggestions that I haven't thought of for affixing the dern thing to mah head? -

Tue, January 22, 2008 - 7:37 AMIsabella,
I have tried some of your ideas for mini top hats. My favorite one is still attach long ribbons and tie them under my chin. One of my customers tied them under her hair:

I have tried the barrettes, and they end up bending the brim of the hat. Some people attach the hat to an Alice band (I don't know how, maybe with elastic bands or ribbons?), and some others sew combs to help keep it in place. If you don't mind doing a small hole, maybe you could use a hat pin.

Re: Tea hats
Wed, January 23, 2008 - 6:48 PMI'm not sure exactly what a tea hat is but if you go to my profile you can see some mini top hats that I make. I buy the pre-made felt hat at Michaels Art Supplies and decorate with quick stick glue, not a glue gun since I always burn myself with glue guns and find that the material pulls off easily, and I use lace and make bows etc... i then attach clip underneath for easy fastening. Good luck :)

Sat, January 26, 2008 - 8:45 PMThanks everyone :D
I figure I'll just tie a ribbon under my chin 'cause clips don't really work on my hair...
thanks for the ideas though :)
