My sister is a fashion magazine fiend, and apparently goth makeup really is the rage now. Each article I read begins with something like, "goth makeup is intimidating, but... " or "it's a little scary"--blah blah blah. I'm somewhat annoyed that going about in my usual eyeliner and purple lips will be something all the American Eagle-wearing girls will be doing, but at least I can stock up on everything cheap while it's trendy!
What do you guys think? The whole thing seems to have started with Lindsay Lohan and a couple other starlets appearing with black nail polish on...

Re: Trendy?
Tue, January 30, 2007 - 8:38 PMBlack nailpolish has always been the "edgy trendy". I remember seeing articles at least a year ago in those magazines about dark brown nailpolish to "tone down".
"Goth" fashion has more or less been the "hip" thing ever since the hot topic + emo domination, so this is nothing new. I wouldn't expect drastic changes from what people are doing already. People desire to look "adventurous" because it has that certain sex appeal, but they don't want the "evil" reputation. So they imitate it but still stay within the traditional guidelines (dark smokey eye makeup has been around since when?).
Yes, stock up on things while they are available in mass. Not that the world will run out of black eyeliner anytime soon.

Tue, January 30, 2007 - 9:18 PMI know a lot of people hate it when goth becomes "cool" but I *love* it for a number of reasons. First, some people will discover their inner goth and stick with us, increasing our ranks. Second, it means that we can actually find awfully cute clothes and accessories in stores. And third, when the rage is over, we can find all this stuff in the thrift stores. SCORE! -

Re: !
Wed, January 31, 2007 - 7:09 AMIsara, I agree with you. Some weeks ago I saw Mac products in different shades of black, grey, silver and white. And I couldn't help it. I usually don't use a lot of make up, I like only the basics (eye liner, lipstick, nail polish), but the black eye shadow I purchased feels like silk, and when put in the eye seems like ash (and I like it!). BTW, this is the first time I bought a Mac product.

Re: Trendy?
Tue, January 30, 2007 - 10:15 PMi was in walmart today just browsing the nail polish and i think it was revlon has a whole new line of "edgy" new make-up. most of which would have previously been considered goth. looks like a lot of make-up in my bathroom and that have gotten me some looks before. i think it's been popular before when people couldn't discern the difference between waif-ish, heroine model chic and goth. well, that went down in the popularity ranks. now, you see your previously teeny bopper stars all grown up and trying to show that off however they can. be it rebelling against that previous squeaky clean image or showing they're not all sunshine and happiness by being "dark" or "goth." i definitely agree this could have something to do with it. also, kids want to find ways to rebel, but not be ostracized. that means doing something out there, but not unsafe. so, they go against what their parents want in a look. and if someone real popular, like lindsay lohan does it, it isn't completely unacceptable socially.

Re: Trendy?
Tue, January 30, 2007 - 10:27 PMI can wait out the trend with no issue, it's come and gone many times. Besides, it's easy for us to spot the trendsters from the lifers.
Honestly - I'm thrilled when the high end cosmetic companies start making darker colors to suit us :-) -

Re: Trendy?
Wed, January 31, 2007 - 1:32 AMThat's actually what I look forward to as well, when quality makeup lines make their stuff in good colors. Black lipstick may be gothy, but bad makeup is bad makeup. Worst thing I see is plastic crumbly looking lips. Stealing those 99 cent wet n' wild black nailpolish was high school days! And they chipped like no tomorrow. Will no one make black lipstick with metallic glow that actually blends well with the skin?

Re: Trendy?
Wed, January 31, 2007 - 8:25 AMyes but when those people will attempt to try goth makeup, they'll still just look like complete tards. they'll just be tards with too much makeup. most of them will realize how stupid they look before they leave the house and wash it off. the others will give me something for my co-workers and I to laugh at at work.
yeah i'm a bitch. -

Re: Trendy?
Wed, January 31, 2007 - 8:41 AMThe only thing that bothers me about this trend... Is that they are altering things that I have always been able to stock up on. Say... fishnet, and stripey (sp?) stockings. The last time that went looking for some, everyone was selling leggings. Eeew! Fishnets without feet! Also, I was looking for a t-shirt with a skull and cross bones to wear with the leather suspenders I had made in London... and all I could find was baby blue and light pink. Honestly, it seems like once I find a style that I like, the season changes, and nobody makes it anymore. I suppose the only solution to that would be to move to Italy or France, where they aren't so sketchy with fashion. Although, I can't bag on all of it. I do kinda like the open toe (40's style) patent heels that I've been seeing around. I refuse to buy something while everyone else is wearing it though.

Re: Trendy?
Wed, January 31, 2007 - 9:18 AMOne other good thing about "trendy" is that it makes it more likely that the un-goths in our lives may actually pick out a decent gift for us. My sister hasn't given me a bad gift since she discovered Hot Topic and she got me a dark grey skull and crossbones t-shirt at Target - she says it's easier now that she can actually find things I might use. -

Wed, January 31, 2007 - 11:40 AMVery true. For xmas I had my boyfriend's uber religious and uber conservative sisters get me a black patent clutch purse. First purse I've ever owned in my life, but it was black patent and had a huge buckle on it! -

I know *exactly* what you mean--like seeing really nicely styled corsets in baby blue, or once I saw a gorgeous skirt, very tattered gypsy sort of thing... but khaki. -

Re: Trendy?
Wed, January 31, 2007 - 12:57 PMWhat killed me was at Halloween - I saw "Gothic Fishnets" at Walmart.....they had "rips" in them! As bad as people who buy jeans already artfully torn.....all those years I spent wearing my clothes until they were worn in just the right spots and someone has to come along and screw it up. -

Re: Trendy?
Fri, February 2, 2007 - 1:28 PMI know! I saw the exact same torn "gothic" fishnets hot topic. i was like geez how hard is it to tear fishnets. pretty damn hard i guess

Re: Trendy?
Fri, February 2, 2007 - 1:48 AMEveryone is happy that we can now buy our eye make up from big name, high quality brands... but here's the big question-
Is Goth fashionable enough for them to make decent pale foundation? I can't find any pale enough to suit my skin, everything's at least three shades darker than me! I'd rather not trust the traditional paleface stuff, it often looks far too tacky. I'll embrace this new 'goth' fashion trend when I see high quality extra-pale foundation. -

Re: Trendy?
Fri, February 2, 2007 - 8:33 AMI go to the MAC professional store and get mine. The problem with that solution is that there aren't Pro stores everywhere. Still, if you're in a major metropolitan area, might be worth seeing if there's one around. The regular MAC stores might have it as well. -

Fri, February 2, 2007 - 12:54 PMRest assured: the trendsters will eventually get tired of it and we can sweep in and buy all the stuff on the bargain rack!

Fri, February 9, 2007 - 10:39 PMShiseido has a complete line of skin care products devoted to making your skin whiter. Expensive, if you want the whole deal. For at least a couple of years now pretty much every Korean makeup brand has come out with an equivalent whitening skin care products. If you're in LA area, you can find them in Korea town. If not, then just go for Shiseido.

Re: Trendy?
Fri, February 16, 2007 - 2:16 PMPrescriptives (in most department stores, thus pretty easy to access) can custom-blend a foundation for you. You may even find a match in their available pre-mixed line.
Trust me, I know how frustrating it is to find light enough foundation ...
I've lived in LA for over 15 years and constant UV exposure here (and failure to apply sunblock reigiously) has gradually darkened my once-porcelain skin. Back when I started wearing makeup in my college years (eek -25 years ago) there were NO commercially-prepared foundations by any existing makeup line light enough to match my natural color. Finally, I found the right shade at a theatrical makeup store ! Unfortunately it was a heavy cream in a tube - great for evening makeup and gesiha-opaque perfection, but not suitable for daytime. I was overjoyed when I found Prescriptives because I could finally use a decent-quality, refined-textured liquid foundation.

Re: Trendy?
Mon, February 12, 2007 - 2:10 PMyeah but.. I think it's funny because I've worked for the company for a long time, and they'll say that they won't carry something on principle, and then turn around and carry it because it sells.
it's really a ska style with the checker suspenders, but the white polo part screams fred perry skinhead. while a lot of ska fans are not skinheads, a lot of skinheads listen to ska. but it's funny to me because a guy came in asking specificly for thin white suspenders and then didn't want the ones we had because they didn't cross in the back.

Re: Trendy?
Sat, February 17, 2007 - 12:57 PM*sigh*
I don't use foundation because...well, I've never found any (or really gone looking for it) and also I don't really think I could pull of the pale look. I do on the other hand wear eyeliner and black nailpolish on occasion...like...when I'm not to tired to go and put it on in the morning. Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of truly gothy clothing but I'm excited it's coming into fashion 'cause then I can go to target and get some stuff. Hopefully, someone will bring back the knee high stripy socks and the stripy tights so I can find some...
It'll be just like when Victorian was the thing...hopefully, it won't vanish just when I'm gettin' into it though.
